Introduced to calligraphy by her father at an early age, she has dedicated over four decades to mastering the craft. Rooted in the regular scripts of Yan Zhenqing and Liu Gongquan, her study expanded to encompass the masters Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi, Zhang Xu, Huai Su, Huang Tingjian, and Mi Fu, alongside seal, clerical, and other classical traditions. While exceptionally accomplished in running and cursive scripts, her artistic voice has been continuously refined through deep engagement with brush, ink, and tradition. Remarkably ambidextrous, she commands a distinct aesthetic with each hand: her right delivers powerful, expressive freedom, while her left exudes a delicate, ethereal grace. Highly sought-after by private collectors and public institutions alike, her works have been exhibited and curated across Singapore and internationally.

From an early age, she was immersed in calligraphy under the influence of her father, and has devoted more than four decades to its study and practice. Rooted in the regular scripts of Yan Zhenqing and Liu Gongquan, she went on to study the styles of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi, Zhang Xu, Huai Su, Huang Tingjian, and Mi Fu, while also exploring seal and clerical scripts and other classical calligraphic traditions. She is particularly accomplished in running and cursive script.

Through sustained engagement with tradition and continued exploration of brush and ink, she has gradually developed a distinctive personal style. She is virtuosically ambidextrous, each hand a master of a distinct writing style. Her right-hand commands power and freedom, while her left hand exudes a delicate elegance that is both uplifting and ethereal. Her calligraphy artworks, highly sought-after by both private collectors and public organisations, have been curated by Singaporeans and international art exhibitors and gallerists.

Artistic philosophy

Between Tradition and Expression

Rooted in over four decades of dedication to Chinese calligraphy, Grace’s artistic journey is shaped by a deep appreciation for classical traditions and the expressive possibilities of brush and ink.

Her mastery of both hands gives rise to two distinct artistic expressions. The right embodies strength, freedom, and grandeur, while the left reveals a quieter elegance, rich in subtlety and classical charm.

Through every stroke, I seek to preserve the essence of Chinese calligraphy while developing an artistic language uniquely my own. – Artistic philosophy of Grace Chen Liang
